Like a lot of physicians, Dr. Natalie Higgins knew the career she wanted when she was still a child. "I wanted to be a doctor since I was five years old, I guess I always wanted to help people," she recalls. "I became interested in surgery when I was in medical school."
As a facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Higgins performs a wide range of procedures on patients including face lifts, rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, forehead lifts, and many other procedures. Before doing any procedure, she carefully consults with the patient and learns what their goals are. "It’s my job to not only help patients look better but also feel better about themselves. That’s why it’s so important to consult carefully with each patient before every procedure."
According to Dr. Higgins, endoscopic techniques in facial plastic surgery have allowed surgeons to perform procedures such as forehead lifts using smaller incisions. "The newer endoscopic techniques allow us to make multiple small incisions when doing these procedures," explains Dr. Higgins. "This allows a quicker recovery time for patients."
Many patients come to Dr. Higgins for Botox and Restylane injections. Botox is an excellent way to improve the appearance of frown lines, forehead creases and "crows feet" around the eyes. By relaxing the underlying muscles, Botox reduces the appearance of wrinkles. Restylane is a clear gel that creates volume in the skin and can be used to treat wrinkles, scars and enhance the lips. Many patients combine Botox and Restylane treatments to help them look their best. "These products are a great way to enhance your appearance without surgery, which is why they have become so popular," says Dr. Higgins.
In addition to performing cosmetic procedures, Dr. Higgins also performs reconstructive surgery on the face and scar revisions for people who have been disfigured by accidents or disease. "It’s very satisfying to me to use my surgical skills to help people in this way. I really enjoy making an impact with patients. They are so appreciative of the work you do, it’s what makes my job so special."
